Packaging Should be Compostable, Say 85% of Brits
85% of Brits say food packaging should be compostable, according to a new poll by Populus.
The poll of 2,104 British consumers also found that two thirds said the food industry should be leading the way towards more frequently compostable packaging, rather than consumers or the government.
And 67% said they felt concerned about the increased levels of plastic packaging being used during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Consumers also said that a higher price for compostable packaging would not deter them, with over half (58%) saying they would be willing to pay more for it.
The Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA)’s Managing Director David Newman commented, “We have a huge composting industry in the UK.
“Ministers should urgently recognise the role of compostable packaging in reducing non-recyclable plastic waste, by encouraging collection of compostable packaging with food so that materials like film can be safely and effectively composted.”
