UK Consumers Push for Compostable Packaging
A new poll has revealed that UK consumers prefer compostable packaging to plastic.
The Yonder survey of over 2,000 UK consumers, commissioned by TIPA, found that 83% of Brits prefer food to be wrapped in compostable – instead of plastic – packaging due to sustainability concerns.
More than eight in ten also agreed that a tax aimed at reducing the amount of plastic packaging used by brands is a good idea, and 80% believed that such a tax should treat compostable packaging differently to traditional plastic packaging.
Co-founder of A Plastic Planet Sian Sutherland commented, “There is not one silver bullet solution to our plastic crisis; instead there will be a myriad of alternatives as we switch to better, more sustainable materials and systems. Consumers have rightly recognised that there is a place for compostable materials in our future.
“When compostables are used as a conduit to take food waste into the food waste and composting system, this is a double whammy win for the environment.”
