What is Industry 4.0 and What Does It Mean for Print?

A recent article by HP’s Gershon Alon described “Industry 4.0” – or the fourth Industrial Revolution.

With the print industry making huge leaps forward and introducing a multitude of new innovations, Alon argues that a new age is beckoning.

HP defines the fourth Industrial Revolution as being defined by the use of technological advancements such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and big data – innovations that have already transformed other industries. But Alon argues these innovations are also transforming print.

“Industry 4.0 is just as relevant for the printing industry as it is for self-driving cars or smartphones. Industrial devices, such as printing presses, are connected to the Internet and can constantly transmit data about their status,” says Alon.

The print industry has already begun tentatively making use of these new technologies – with our brainchild Digital Direct Mail being the first direct mail product to use the Internet of Things to create an interactive experience for consumers.

“Industry 4.0 will enable the smart print factory of the future that will be more agile, flexible and responsive to customers,” says Alon.

“Industry 4.0 in the print shop is no longer just a strategic advantage. It is an operational necessity.”
