83% of Businesses Don’t Know About Upcoming Plastic Tax

A new study by Veolia has revealed that 83% of businesses are unaware of the UK’s impending Plastic Packaging Tax.

The tax, which is planned to take effect in April 2022, places a £200 per tonne levy on producers and importers of plastic packaging – unless it includes at least 30% recycled content.

The tax aims to increase plastic recycling in the UK, along with promoting more sustainable practices by businesses.

Veolia’s survey found that businesses named government mandates (30%) and environmental conscience (48%) as their two biggest influences for sustainable practices.

Tim Duret, Director of Sustainable Technology for Veolia UK and Ireland commented, “The Plastics Packaging Tax is removing the economic burden of acting more sustainably and levelling the playing field for businesses.

“It is essential that we continue pairing our actions with the backing of policy. 84% of businesses we spoke to agreed and support the incremental increase to the Plastic Packaging Tax.”
